Our practice

Our goal is to provide our patients with high-quality and timely surgical services within their own community. Our close connection with The Ottawa Hospital allows us to quickly connect patients to specialists in Ottawa when needed.

Team-based practice

In order to improve patient care and expedite wait times, Dr. Carver and Dr. Rekman have initiated a team practice structure in the Office of General Surgery.

This means that patients are cared for by both General Surgeons. If a surgery or procedure is booked for you today, it may be performed by either Dr. Carver or Dr. Rekman on the day of your procedure. Similarly, if you are admitted to hospital before or after your procedure, both Dr. Carver and Dr. Rekman may be involved in your care.

We would be happy to discuss this with you during your appointment.

In partnership with The Ottawa Hospital

Both Dr. Carver and Rekman also work at The Ottawa Hospital as Acute Care General Surgeons and have academic appointments at the University of Ottawa. This allows us to contribute to innovative surgical research and help train medical students and resident physicians.

Surgical Services

An experienced and dynamic team, that works in collaboration with the health care network.

RVH offers a variety of surgical services including general surgery, gynecology, urology and endoscopy.

The personnel of our service ensure quality care that meets and even exceeds the needs of clients in a safe, caring, friendly and professional atmosphere.

Pre-operative Clinic (Also referred to as PAU)

All elective surgery patients attend a pre-operative clinic on an outpatient basis. The appointment will be with a nurse and could also include a visit with the anesthetist.

The goal of the Clinic is to:

  • better coordinate the patient’s needs
  • review health history and ensure any required tests are completed as necessary
  • provide information and answer questions
  • allow the patient to participate in their plan of care

Please bring all your medications in their original containers to the appointment.

It is very important to follow instructions provided during your pre-op clinic visit for your upcoming surgery. Otherwise, your procedure could be delayed or cancelled.

Endoscopy

What we do:

  • Colonoscopy (lower gastrointestinal tract)
  • Gastroscopy (upper gastrointestinal tract)
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (evaluates the lower part of the large intestine)

RVH also participates in the Colorectal Screening Program. This screening includes patients with a family history of colon cancer, or a positive FIT test (formerly FOBT).

Please be aware that a Physician referral is required for endoscopy. Referrals can be faxed to our Surgeon’s office at 613-432-5054.
