Speech and Language Pathologist The Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) is a 55-bed, fully accredited facility located just 45 minutes west of Ottawa, serving a catchment area of over 60,000. We are hiring a Permanent Full-Time (Non-Union) Speech and Language Pathologist.
Reporting to the V.P. Patient Care, Quality, & Clinical Services, and CNE at RVH, the Speech and Language Pathologist provides services to both preschool clients (~0.8 FTE) and adult (~0.2 FTE). Preschool speech and language clients are seen in partnership with the First Words Preschool Speech and Language Program of Ottawa and Renfrew County and includes education, assessment, parent directed programs, individual and group treatment, mediated therapy and consultation to parents and caregivers. Responsibilities will include services for clients in the areas of speech, language, fluency and include families whose primary language is other than French or English. Adult services include inpatient consultations (primarily for swallowing issues may include some support for communication) and outpatient swallowing assessments. The SLP works as part of the multi-disciplinary team for patient care. Functions as sole charge clinician on site addressing concerns regarding departmental operation to the appropriate Administrative Head.
Duties will include but are not limited to: • Assesses disorders of speech, language, fluency, and swallowing by evaluating the nature and degree of impairment. • Performs formal or informal assessments and treatment (e.g., individual, group, parent training) for children under 6 years of age as a member of the FW team. • Treats impairments by planning, directing and/or conducting remedial programs. • Provides counselling and guidance to individuals with communication and/or swallowing impairments, their families, employers, educators or other health care workers. • Provide services virtually when required/requested. • Maintains a current medical record for each patient. • Participates in meetings and conferences on patients for the purposes of providing information and gaining an awareness of overall patient functioning. • Attends relevant team, departmental, and administrative meetings within the Hospital and First Words. • Maintains awareness and liaison with other health care workers and the community. • Maintains statistical records as required by the Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the FW program. • Plans and directs volunteer programs related to specific patients as appropriate. • Provides speech and language services at alternate sites as contracted by the Hospital. • Responsible for personal professional development on a continuing basis. • Serves as the primary resource for speech language services within the Hospital. • Responsible for maintaining, augmenting and developing clinical tools and resources necessary for optimal program operations. • May be required to teach or lecture to the community, student nurses, resident students, and allied health professionals as related to the nature of communication disorders in adults and preschool children and the programs offered to aid rehabilitation of these individuals. • Ensures cooperation, collaboration and communication with First Words. • Supervise Communicative Disorders Assistants. • RVH committee work (Accessibility work done with IDEA Committee)
QualificationsQualifications: • Vulnerable Sector Check completed within past six months mandatory upon hire (Essential) • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology (Essential) • Registration with CASLPO (Essential) • Valid Ontario’s driver’s license and access to a vehicle (Essential) • Minimum two (2) years’ experience with the preschool population (Preferred) • Hanen It Takes Two to Talk trained and certified (Preferred) • Lidcombe fluency trained (Preferred) • Experience with MCCSS Preschool Speech and Language services (Preferred) • Experience supervising Communicative Disorders Assistants (Preferred) • Strength in teamwork and communication skills (Essential) • Excellent time management and organizational skills (Essential) • Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred) • Willingness to work flexible hours (Essential) • Experience documenting in an electronic health record (Preferred) • Ability to work independently and to perform duties within the physical demands of the work area. • Valid Ontario’s driver’s license and access to a vehicle (Essential) • Demonstrated strength in teamwork and in communication with families • Adult dysphagia with VFSS (preferred) • Adult communication disorders (preferred) • Minimum of two years hospital related experience in assessment and management of dysphagia and video fluoroscopic studies preferred • Experience with VFSS preferred • Current knowledge of a wide range of swallowing and communication disorders • Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years’ recent experience with dysphagia and communication disorders in a subacute and/or acute medical environment
