Physiotherapy

The Renfrew Victoria Hospital Physiotherapy Department is dedicated to providing innovative care that focuses on the physical needs of patients.

Our team prides itself on treating patients with dignity and respect in an environment that fosters health and wellness.

RVH Physiotherapy Department hours are Monday to Friday (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • RVH Physiotherapists are registered and licenced with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
  • Our Physiotherapists have a university degree in Physiotherapy, extensive clinical experience and are committed to helping you or  your family member strengthen their mobility, endurance, confidence and independence. Orthopedic, Neurological, CardioRespiratory and Fall Risk diagnoses are our priority and 80% of our work is with these patients.
  • The Physiotherapy Aides are key to assisting with exercises and mobility programs prescribed by the Physiotherapist.
  • Physiotherapy helps implement many fall prevention strategies for hospital and home. We assist the health care team with discharge planning.

What can you do to help yourself or your family member avoid deconditioning while in hospital
and when you return home?

  • Physiotherapy will recommend individualized safe mobility strategies and exercises for patients.
  • The transfer/mobility sheet at the head of the patient’s bed indicates  whether the patient is deemed safe to mobilize independently or with assistance and gait aids.
  • If the patient has equipment from home it may be brought in and checked for safety (walker, wheelchair, etc.)
  • Supportive walking shoes or running shoes can improve balance and mobility so please bring these in.
  • Ask your Nurse or Physiotherapist  to review your mobility recommendations.
  • The Physiotherapy staff would be pleased to review and teach  exercises or walking assistance techniques to  able and eager  family members.
  • Exercise handouts may be kept at the bedside.
  • Often a transfer belt is used if balance and strength are diminished. Contact the Physiotherapist  at  613-432-4851 extension 282 to arrange a meeting time.

RVH Out-patient Physiotherapy services are very  limited  and  restricted to post orthopedic surgery i.e. knee replacement, acute sciatica, lymphedema, and fracture diagnoses with a doctor’s referral. RVH has a post operative knee class for patients with total or partial knee replacement.  There  are wait-lists and we do not see WSIB or Motor Vehicle Accident.

Other options:

  • Pembroke General Hospital Out-patient Physiotherapy (613-732-2811)
  • CCAC (Community Care Access Centre)
  • Physiotherapy for post-op total knee and total hip repair patients through
  • Ministry of Health’s hip/knee wait-time strategy. If you are discharged from an Ontario hospital 4-5 days post-operatively you qualify for home physiotherapy.
  • Ask your discharge planner to assist you with a referral, or self refer post-op with Champlain CCAC, 613-732-7007.
  • Pembroke Regional Hospital also offers in-patient rehabilitation for hip and knee replacements. Discuss this with your discharge planner.

We encourage all out-patients to use insurance plan coverage (if available) and to seek private therapy.
