There is always something happening at or in support of RVH. Whether it's a concert for patients in Continuing Care, or a milestone celebration in Victoria Cafe, the RVH spirit is alive and well in our community.

Lung Cancer Screening Pilot for People at High Risk

Starting in June 2017, The Ottawa Hospital and Renfrew Victoria Hospital will be taking part in a pilot to screen people at high risk of developing lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women and men in Ontario. Approximately 7,100 people died of lung cancer in 2016 – more than breast, colorectal and prostate cancers combined. People are usually diagnosed with lung cancer when the disease is at an advanced stage and treatment options are limited. Screening can detect lung cancers at an early stage, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

You may be eligible for this pilot if you are between 55 and 74 years old and have smoked cigarettes daily for 20 or more years (not necessarily consecutively). You can be referred to the pilot by your doctor or through your nurse practitioner, or you can contact the Lung Cancer Screening Pilot for People at High Risk directly at 1-844-394-1124.

This pilot will focus on participants in the Ottawa and Renfrew areas. The pilot is restricted to a maximum of 775 eligible participants in the first year; participants who are referred once the maximum number is reached will not be able to participate in the pilot in the first year, but may be able to participate in the second year.

Renfrew Victoria Hospital has welcomed new physician Dr. Bill Blaine to our team and community.

The official announcement made on Thursday, May 22 by representatives of the Renfrew and Area Health Services Village shared that Dr. Blaine replaces retiree Dr. Dave Johnson as anesthesiologist and will also work in the RVH emergency department.

The most recent recruit by the RAHSV expressed his gratefulness for the warm reception he has already received from administration, physicians and nurses.

The Carleton Place native will begin full-time at RVH in July 2014, but has already been working for the past several months on a part-time basis alongside surgeon Dr. Susan Krajewski in the operating room and as an extra set of hands in our ER, explained RVH CEO and President Randy Penney.

“We are excited that Bill has chosen our community and brings with him a wealth of experience,” stated Penney during the announcement ceremonies.

His expertise enhances the first-class health care services that RVH already provides to its patients, added MPP John Yakabuski.
