Ontario Breast Screening Program

Are you a woman 50 years or older?

Take charge of your own health!

  • You may phone and make your own appointment, no physician referral is necessary.
  • You will be cared for by specially trained staff, who will be using the highest technical quality of equipment, film and film processing. Renfrew Victoria Hospital Mammography Service is licensed as an Ontario Breast Screening Program accredited with the Canadian Association of Radiologists.
  • You will receive the results of your screening examination in a letter from OBSP.
  • If an abnormality is found and you do not have a family physician, OBSP will arrange your follow-up investigations and find a physician to follow-up with you on your abnormal screen.
  • A Nurse Examiner, who is a specially trained Registered Nurse, will teach you privately how to examine your own breasts.
  • The OBSP screening process includes two view mammography, a breast examination and instruction in breast self-examination.
  • The OBSP recommends that this type of examination be done every 2 years. As part of the program, a reminder will be sent to you when your examination is due.

What standards must a facility meet to become accredited with the Canadian Association of Radiologists?

Staff:
A Radiologist specialized in reading x-rays of the breast. A technologist specialized in taking x-rays of the breast.

The Ontario Breast Screening Program also includes a Registered Nurse Examiner certified in the Province of Ontario in breast examination.

Staff of the OBSP participate in ongoing education to ensure that the high standards and quality of the program are maintained at all times.

Equipment: "State of the Art"
Every six months, OBSP Physicists who are experts in testing mammographic equipment, visit our Hospital. They make sure that the x-ray equipment operates at the high standards set by the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Commission (HARP) and the Ministry of Health.

Quality Assurance and Control:
To ensure that the equipment is always operating at high standards, our staff perform tests on the equipment each day before doing any examinations. If any problems are detected, examinations are not done until the equipment is fixed. In addition to the daily testing and the testing done every six months, additional testing is done on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
