The Emergency Department of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital has a doctor "on call" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. "On call" means a doctor is available, but NOT always on the premises.
The doctors are NOT employees of the hospital, but are concerned professionals who have made a commitment to provide this vital service for the hospital and the community.
The aim of our emergency department is to provide you with prompt and efficient emergency treatment, subject to the urgency of your condition.
How We Can Help You!
The following is a guideline to help you understand how emergency cases are prioritized at Renfrew Victoria Hospital
1. Emergency - Chest pain, stroke, acute shortness of breath, haemorrhage, accident victims, fractures, severe abdominal pain, etc.
Nursing assessment is done and appropriate assistance provided for every patient. Immediate medical attention is summoned for every life threatening condition.
For less critical cases the doctor "on call" will be contacted and advised of your condition. But it may be necessary for you to wait for a period of time before being examined by a doctor.
2. Deferrable - Flues, colds, earaches, rashes, etc.
NOTE: Prescription renewals and completion of forms are not a function of the Emergency Department.
Your condition requires attention, and the doctor "on call" will be notified of your problem. At his/her instruction you may be:
- asked to see the doctor in his/her office
- referred to your own family doctor, OR
- asked to wait a period of time for treatment.
Please call Emergency before coming with a deferrable illness.
3. Scheduled - cast, dressing, internal exam, minor surgery, recheck visit, etc.
You will be given an appointment for a specific procedure to be done in the Emergency Department.
