Diabetes Education

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which there is high blood glucose (sugar) and an increased risk of damage to the body, much of which is preventable.  There is no cure for diabetes, but keeping blood glucose in good control makes those with diabetes feel well and helps prevent damage.

We believe that:
People with diabetes can live healthy productive lives if they learn how to manage their diabetes well.  Diabetes can be difficult to manage without the support of the diabetes nurse, dietitian and family doctor.

If you:

- have just found out you have diabetes
- have not had much teaching about diabetes
- need a good refresher

You would benefit from our Basic Diabetes Classes.  In these classes, you will learn:

  1. What is diabetes
  2. Common feelings about diabetes
  3. How healthy eating helps diabetes
  4. How to check your own blood glucose at home
  5. What is a good blood glucose level
  6. How being active helps diabetes
  7. What damage can diabetes cause in the body and how to prevent it
  8. What kinds of medications are used

If you have had basic education before but are finding it hard to keep your blood glucose in good control:
We now have small group sessions for people who need more intensive help with managing diabetes.  Diabetes can be tricky to manage, especially if you’ve had it for several years.

If you have Type 1 diabetes, need to start insulin or have very poor blood glucose control :
We will set up an appointment to see you individually.  We will teach you how to inject insulin, adjust diet and adjust insulin dose (together with your doctor).
